WIDE-Confiance-Cosmetic

In this episode of How They Scaled It, host Courtney sits down with Claire Bing, Founder and CEO of Confiance Cosmetic Group, a boutique regulatory consultancy that’s quietly powering some of the fastest-growing beauty brands in the industry. If you’ve heard about Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s men’s care line or wondered who helps beauty brands scale safely, this is the story behind the woman who makes it all happen.

From Medicine to Manufacturing: Claire’s Unlikely Start

Claire Bing didn’t plan on a career in cosmetics. Raised in Ohio, she assumed she’d follow one of a few predictable paths: doctor, teacher, or lawyer. And for a while, she pursued medicine, earning a microbiology degree, taking the MCAT, and preparing for med school. But the moment she completed the exam, she knew it wasn’t for her.

Instead, she landed at a food manufacturing plant working on quality control for donuts. Her first major project? Scaling the production of Dunkin’s pumpkin spice donut, one of their most successful product launches ever. That hands-on experience in quality systems, regulatory oversight, and large-scale manufacturing would unknowingly lay the foundation for her future in beauty.

Tarte Cosmetics, Trial by Fire, and Becoming an Expert

A job listing in New York changed everything. With only a science degree and food industry experience, Claire landed a role at Tarte Cosmetics, then a small startup of fewer than 30 people. It was a leap, but because of the recession, she wore multiple hats and quickly carved out a role as the in-house expert on quality and regulatory affairs.

When the European Union released a sweeping set of new cosmetic regulations, Claire was sent overseas to learn the rules firsthand. Unlike other experts who reviewed regulations from a distance, she was both studying and applying them in real time, giving her a competitive edge and rapidly establishing her as a go-to figure in cosmetics regulation.

The Accidental Entrepreneur

After nearly a decade at Tarte and a stint leading regulatory at a global beauty incubator, Claire left the corporate world with one goal: take a year off. She’d clean the house, go to yoga, and enjoy a well-earned break.

But a single LinkedIn post announcing her availability for consulting changed everything.

Within 24 hours, she had five clients.

From there, Confiance Cosmetic Group was born. Claire started as the sole consultant, but the demand kept growing. Today, her firm supports over 200 clients, many of them VC- or PE-backed brands with revenues ranging from $20M to $250M.

Scaling with Systems, Not Headcount

With only a five-person team, Confiance’s reach might seem impossible. But Claire credits their ability to scale to two things: systems and tech.

She uses Notion to track thousands of client questions and build an internal knowledge base. Her team leverages tools like Claude to query their own data, not the internet, giving clients accurate, contextual answers quickly. They also partner with companies like Ithos and Good Face Project to streamline product lifecycle management and compliance reviews.

The result? Big-brand service with boutique-team intimacy.

Redefining Leadership and Clean Beauty

Claire admits she didn’t always lead the way she does today. In her early career, she thought being a boss meant being tough. But over time, she committed to transformational leadership and created a workplace where feedback is rooted in empathy, not ego.

She now hires with intention, builds roles that support mothers and flexible schedules, and trains her team to communicate directly, kindly, and with permission.

As for clean beauty? Claire’s take is radically practical: the presence of an ingredient matters less than its quality and sourcing. She pushes brands to define not just what they leave out, but what they put in and how they ensure its safety.

“People say ‘I don’t want parabens,’ but blueberries have parabens. What matters is the dose, the process, and the science, not fear-based marketing,” she explains.

A Mission Bigger Than Metrics

Claire’s vision for Confiance isn’t about aggressive growth. It’s about trust. She wants Confiance to be the regulatory partner beauty brands turn to whether they’re just launching or preparing for acquisition.

“I want us to be the company that brands rely on when they need the truth, backed by science and delivered with kindness,” she says.

And even though she helps brands scale, she’s not afraid to work herself out of a job: “Our goal is to make clients so buttoned up that they no longer need us.”
